Funktioniert nur bedingt, da dann die weniger guten noch schlechter sind.
Aber vielen Dank für den Hinweis. Bestes Ergebnis ist und bleibt bei 500 x 500 in 150 dpi und Kanten glätten eingeschaltet.

Dies liegt an der - standardmäßig eingeschalteten - Option "Kanten glätten":

Das Glätten der Kanten bzw. die Vermeidung der Sichtbarkeit einzelner Pixel bringt eine gewisse Unschärfe mit sich. Mag sein, daß der verwendete Algorithmus bei sehr großen Quellen aus Geschwindigkeitsgründen nicht ganz so optimal arbeitet.

Wenn Ihnen die Cover zu unscharf erscheinen, schalten Sie diese Option einfach mit einem Rechtsklick auf ein beliebiges Cover und obigen Menüpunkt aus. Die Einstellung gilt dann allerdings für alle Cover.

zum ersten Mal bin ich in der Lage, hochwertige Scans von den Covern zu machen (Auflösung 1600 x 1600 bei 600 dpi. Die erscheinen aber völlig unscharf. Erst bei Reduzierung auf 500 x500 und 150 dpi, erziele ich das beste Ergebnis um nicht zu sagen Fotoqualität.
Wieso eigentlich?
