For those who wonder why Kmixer not passing a DTS .WAV is relevant, it's because that's the easiest way to test if whether the system is passing bit-perfect signals. It's not easy in all cases to tell if a 44.1K signal has been transcoded to something else, because a PC could be internally doing 44.1k>48K>44.1K and you might think it's fine.

Especially if you are going PC soundcard via Toslink/SPDIF to an outboard receiver with a status indicator. The indicator may say the A/V receiver is getting 44.1K, but it may have been transcoded in the PC without you knowing it. Passing 44.1K DTS will definitely tell you if it's a bit-perfect reproduction path; if it's trancoded, a sound clip will be just white noise. It's like a CSI forensic tool!

We can tell you if we have implemented it ;-) With chance, one of the next updates will have ASIO support, but currently, we cannot guarantee this.

Well, we have not thought about this point yet. But I think, as MilkDrop I is fine, eg. ASIO support has a far larger priority.

Silverjuke, as far as I know, does not offer the possibility of bitperfect transfer, neither internally nor through the use of an external player.

Silverjuke on Vista offers the best of both worlds I.M.O. but the drawback is that Vista's hardware requirements are so high that the idea of using an old PC for a jukebox no longer works.

There must be some golden middle way. What would be the hardware requirements for XP - Silverjuke - KS/ASIO (and some upsampling maybe?).

I can now say, it's not a hoax. Listen to Silverjuke on Vista, a jawdropping difference!

Kmixer does not upsample, but some soundcards do, including the Soundblaster range. This may result in less-than-perfect sound quality.

It is for that reason alone that I picked a soundcard with a C-media chipset. It turned out to be the cheapest one as well, a nice bonus...

thank you for your detailed information. I did not know that the windows Kmixer is that bad (and I'm still not sure). Maybe we will add ASIO support some day, however, this will have a very low priority. If there are prossible improvements affecting this point: Maybe Microsoft will improve their DirectX layer?

Do other users have same experiences?

By the way: All this does not affect the Mac-version; OS X has "kernel streaming" by default - AFAIK this is called "Core Audio" there.
