WMA playback in Windows 98 causing error code 41

Hey,

I really love silverjuke, it runs just great on my Windows XP box, however I would like to use it on my old windows 98 system, and I am having a few problems getting WMA playback to work.

Silverjuke plays MP3's fine, and windows media player etc. can play all my files. However when I open WMA files in silverjuke I get the error code:41,saying that the file cannot be opened.

I've re-installed my sound card drivers, silverjuke, directx & windows media player but I'm still getting the same message with all my WMA files.

I would really love to get this to work, as changing all my WMAs to MP3 would be a right pain, so any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Do the WMA-files have DRM-restrictions? If so, note, that such files cannot be played easily with media players other than the Windows Media Player.

If the WMA-files are known not to be WMA-restricted: Can you please send an erroneous file to drsilver@silverjuke.net so that we can check out the reason for this here? (our test files are all working just fine here)

Hello flatfish - we've received your mail and your note, that the problem only occurred under Windows 9x - and this is the point:

Some (not all) WMA files will only play with the most recent version of Windows or the Windows Media Player installed. Windows 2000 and Windows XP should not make any problems, but for older Windows versions, you may need an update of the Windows Media Player which will install the needed codecs.

I note that you say DRM-restricted files "cannot be played easily" with media players other than the Windows Media Player. We have some wma files with drm restrictions that played through previous versions of SilverJuke but will not play with the current 2.03 version under Windows 2000 Professional. Any ideas?

Silverjuke 1.xx has been using Winamp for playback. Due to undocumented changes in the Winamp plugin API, in the current versions of Silverjuke (2.xx) we do no longer rely on Winamp and play the WMA files via the Windows Media Player. The Windows Media Player may have bigger restrictions when being used from external applications, however, please also make sure using the most recent version of the Windows Media Player.
